A hospitalized driver died days after a two-car wreck in Moreno Valley left them with major injuries, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said.

On Sunday, July 25, a black Kia Forte collided into a red Toyota Matrix in the intersection of Lasselle Street and Via Xavier around 3:25 p.m., the Sheriff’s Department said. Sheriff’s deputies extricated the driver of the Toyota, who had major injuries, and had him taken to a hospital.

The driver and child passenger in the Kia were found to be unharmed, the Sheriff’s Department said.

Accident investigators preliminarily believe that the Kia was travelling south of Lasselle Street when it entered the intersection of Via Xavier against a solid red light, the Sheriff’s Department said. The Toyota was turning left headed north onto Lasselle Street when it was struck by the Kia.

Intoxication was not considered a factor in this crash, the Sheriff’s Department said.

On Wednesday, accident investigators learned that the driver of the Toyota died from their injuries, the Sheriff’s Department said.

The identity of the deceased Toyota driver will not be released pending further investigation and the notification to next of kin.

Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to call Deputy Jason Slover at 951-486-6889.
